Moonmoth and grasshopper that flee our page
And still wing on, untarnished of the name
We pinion to your bodies to assuage
Our envy of your freedom—we must maim
Because we are usurpers, and chagrined—
And take the wing and scar it in the hand.
Names we have, even, to clap on the wind;
But we must die, as you, to understand.
I dreamed that all men dropped their names, and sang
As only they can praise, who build their days
With fin and hoof, with wing and sweetened fang
Struck free and holy in one Name always.
I wrote an article for the Glasgow Uni Guardian. It was aimed at freshers and was a fairly basic piece talking about happenings with a diy ethos in Glasgow, specifically music. This is here for me to clear up some possible misconceptions. I’m under no illusion as to how few people this debate really involves, I realise that this diatribe must look fairly self-important, and understand that the use in talking about it is very limited, but anyway;
1) I didn’t write the headline. I do not think DIY is ‘the future’ because bands and artists who make up a loose collective like the one that might exist in Glasgow cannot afford to fund their lifestyles through their creative work alone. This might of been possible in cheaper, pre-file sharing days gone by, but today everyone needs a shite job on the side to keep it going. Something like this cannot hope to replace the brutal industry that currently exists. Perhaps instead of the future, we might describe DIY as something that reconstitutes itself from day to day, exists in the moment without an agenda, and has done for however many years. It’s true that the promoters and labels I mention have been around for a while and as such have been in a position where they can make wonderful things like Music is the Music Language happen, but then again, anyone who really set their mind to it might have made it happen. Cry Parrot and Tracer Trails just happen to be very good at it.
2) I didn’t write the photo captions. I would never use the term ‘riot-grrl’ and Divorce in the same sentence.
R.M.F, off my new Ep which i’ll put out at the end of the month.
